Key Experience

Coming from a silvicultural research background, Martin Herbert has developed a special interest in site factor investigations and analyses for commercial forestry, and the estimation of sustainable yield potential.  His approach emphasises the identification, quantification and understanding of key site criteria and their interactions concerning the natural resources of a particular land holding.  He has worked internationally over a diverse range of tree growing conditions from cold temperate to equatorial, and evolved a practical strategy of deriving unique site-based models for optimising site-specific forestry operations for silviculture, management, planning and harvesting.  While also involved in technology transfer and training, the link with research has been maintained through active participation in diverse university and industry projects.
